SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A tsunami warning issued Thursday morning by the National Weather Service for coastal areas of Northern California and Oregon has been canceled following an estimated magnitude 7.0 earthquake reported off the coast of Humboldt County.


The magnitude 7.0 earthquake at 10:44 a.m. was followed a few minutes later by an estimated magnitude 5.8 earthquake near Cobb in Lake County and then a series of aftershocks, USGS said. The shaking from the large earthquake was felt in many parts of the Bay Area.

A tsunami warning has been lifted after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Humboldt County prompted officials to warn Bay Area residents to stay away from the coastline.

Reports of cracks in the foundation of houses, broken glass and windows





Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said residents experienced some cracks in the foundation of their homes, as well as broken glass and windows, but nothing serious.


Honsal said he was in his office in the 75-year-old courthouse in downtown Eureka when he felt the earthquake.


‘We’re used to it. It’s known here as ‘earthquake country,'” he said. “It wasn’t a sharp jolt. It was a slow roller, but significant.”

Busy. Biden briefed on the Humboldt Co. earthquake





President Joe Biden was briefed earlier today about the earthquake in California, a White House spokesman said.


“At his direction, Senior Administration and regional FEMA officials are in contact with their state and local counterparts in California and Oregon. We stand ready to provide further support as needed – there are no requests for federal assistance at this time,” the White House spokesperson said. said Jeremy Edwards.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signs emergency declaration after 7.0 NorCal earthquake





Governor Gavin Newsom says he signed a declaration of emergency after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Northern California near Humboldt and Del Norte counties. He says damage analyzes are being conducted.


California Sen. Mike McGuire said on social media that about 10,000 residents are without power in the region and there have been reports of homes separated from their foundations.


Rio Dell Mayor Debra Garnes tells ABC News no injuries were reported, but there are cracks in the road and one high school had a gas leak as a result of the earthquake.


Ferndale’s city manager reported minor roof damage.


As of 1:30 PM Thursday, USGS reported more than 30 aftershocks since the first earthquake.
